As decades have passed, the American ideal of immense self-pride through the lens of consumer culture has been exposed as increasingly contradictory. Advertising, in all its rose tinted glory, has been a primary conduit for this, with particularly glaring examples in tobacco advertisements. I focus on these, as well as other industries that have fallen from grace, in order to highlight the inconsistencies in the idea of Americana.
Through a subtle color palette, I subvert the American design language to create my own interpretation of these advertisements in an array of media including silkscreen, painting and sculpture.
